William Shakespeare (pokřtěn 26. dubna 1564 – zemřel 23. dubna 1616) byl anglický básník, dramatik a herec, který je široce považován za největšího anglicky píšícího spisovatele a celosvětově nejvýznamnějšího dramatika. Je často nazýván anglickým národním básníkem a „bardem z Avonu“. Připisuje se mu přibližně 38 dochovaných her (včetně těch, na kterých asi s někým spolupracoval), 154 sonetů, dvě dlouhé epické básně a několik dalších básní, z nichž některé jsou nejistého autorství.

Jeho hry byly přeloženy do všech hlavních živých jazyků a jsou uváděny častěji než hry jakéhokoli jiného dramatika.Shakespeare se narodil a vyrůstal ve Stratfordu nad Avonou, v anglickém hrabství Warwickshire. Ve věku 18 let se oženil s Anne Hathawayovou, se kterou měl tři děti: dceru Susannu a dvojčata syna Hamneta a dceru Judith. Někdy mezi lety 1585 a 1592 začal v Londýně úspěšnou kariéru jako herec, spisovatel a částečný vlastník herecké společnosti s názvem Služebníci lorda komořího (Lord Chamberlain's Men), později známé jako Královská společnost (King's Men). Zdá se, že kolem roku 1613 ve věku 49 let odešel na odpočinek do Stratfordu, kde zemřel o tři roky později. Dochovalo se jen velmi málo záznamů ze Shakespearova soukromého života, což podnítilo značné spekulace o takových věcech, jako jsou jeho fyzický vzhled, sexuální zaměření a náboženské přesvědčení, a také zda práce, které jsou jemu přisuzovány, nebyly ve skutečnosti napsány někým jiným.Shakespeare vytvořil většinu ze svých známých děl mezi lety 1589 a 1613. Až v roce 1623 John Heminges a Henry Condell, dva Shakespearovi přátelé a herečtí kolegové, publikovali takzvané První folio, první konečné a souhrnné znění Shakespearových her. Je to posmrtné vydání, které zahrnuje až na dvě všechny hry, obecně připisované Shakespearovi. Předmluvou k tomuto vydání byla poema od Bena Jonsona, ve které je Shakespeare prozíravě oslavován jako člověk „nejen pro tento čas, ale navěky“. Ve 20. a počínajícím 21. století byly Shakespearovy práce opakovaně znovuobjevovány a upravovány na podkladě nových směrů bádání a inscenování. Jeho hry zůstávají velmi populární a jsou neustále studovány, uváděny a interpretovány v různých kulturních a politických souvislostech po celém světě.
